I am interested in human beings, in the tensions and contradictions we carry around with us every day… things which are never completely one thing or another… which are at the same time ancient and modern, invincible and fragile, sacred and pedestrian… things which are at the same time joyful and immeasurably sad. I am interested in feelings… nuanced, complex feelings… like something seen out of the corner of your eye, which you somehow know was significant. I am interested in the hopes and anxieties we hold about the future, and how they play out in our lives.

Growing up in a number of outback Australian towns developed my love of exploring landscapes, strong cups of tea and a good chinwag. Respect for Country and the significance of 'place' is at the heart of my practice. My photographic works focus on manipulating realism and exploring abstract notions through an aerial perspective.

The colour, line, pattern, and texture of our ever-changing landscapes always astounds me. Often these aspects are not visible when driving through the flat expanses of our different regions. Through exploring and photographing Country from an aerial perspective my intention is to share the natural beauty I observe. In doing so I aim to deepen the viewer’s connection to Boodja (Country) by engaging them with aspects of the landscape they would not normally observe. While drone photography has enabled us to capture landscapes using a new technology it is important to acknowledge that this perspective has been documented by Aboriginal people for thousands of years.

Shona McGregor

Shona McGregor

Shona McGregor is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work utilises the processes of magnification and abstraction to explore the central theme of the overlooked.

Her love of the miniature and interest in perception began in her past life as an early childhood and special needs teacher where her work with small children and individuals with autism drew her attention to not only what we see, but how we see and process that information. Whether it be the abstraction of elements found in the tiny hidden spaces around us or examining the overlooked as a psychological space, she is seeking to give the viewer the time and headspace to consider the image before them and experience a sense of wonder we often seem to misplace as adults.

A Bachelor of Arts graduate in Visual Arts at Edith Cowan University and the winner of the Artsource Industry Award 2017 : Shona is currently juggling family life and her busy arts practice with her partner, two children, and Boston terrier Wilbur.
